The Wickway Community Centre was set up as a registered charity in 1989. The local community fought very hard to gain funding for the current purpose-built building, which was completed in 1997. The Centre strives to provide social, recreational and educational opportunities for the people of the Peckham Ward, Southwark. The objectives of the centre are to improve the quality of life of local residents through

  • Tackling isolation.
  • Expanding the opportunities for members of the community by providing a non judgemental environment to learn new skills, improve self esteem and confidence;
  • Meeting the needs of all sections of the community including those normally less enfranchised such as young people, women, single parents, unemployed people and senior citizens; and
  • Providing flexible space as a resource for the community.

The centre is staffed by:

  • Gary Saward - full-time Centre Coordinator/Manager;
  • Peter Joseph - part-time Community Development Worker;
  • Tony Wilcox - part-time Premises Officer; and
  • Eight volunteer management committee members drawn from the local community and user groups from a wide variety of backgrounds
